Niamh Malone has just turned 17, and started running with Monaghan Phoenix Athletic Club when she was 9 years old . She began by competing and winning the Monaghan Community Games, U.10 200m, and progressed to compete at Nationals. She enjoyed it so much, she decided to join the club. Niamh then went on to win the U.10 Ulster Cross Country the following month and hasn't looked back.
Monaghan Phoenix policy is to expose each of its members to all track and field events, and so one night at training Hurdles were being introduced, and she took to them like a duck to water. She progressed that year to compete in the U.13 Ulster 60m hurdles where she finished in the medals. Her coach, Brian Peppard, encouraged her to try the 250m hurdles when she was U.15 and went on to win her first All-Ireland title in the event. Niamh then made the move up to 300m and 400m hurdles. She also competes in the 800m.
Niamh says her greatest achievement to date was representing Ireland at the European Youth Olympics last summer in Georgia, and running a 2 second personal best of 61.51 seconds in the 400m hurdles.
She attends Castleblayney College, Monaghan, Ireland where she is a 5th Year Student. Despite her love for athletics, she is focusing on her education as her main priority just now.
Niamh hopes to get the opportunity to compete for Ireland again, citing it as both an honour and an amazing experience.
